ARTIST STATEMENT- A SEARCH

My work in Porcelain and Stoneware has been an expression of a search for understanding the creative cycle natural to all of us.  Deep within the unknown territory of the inner landscape lies the possibility of inspiration and a mysterious connection that may open the way to the unexpected.  Myths, metaphors, and motifs play key roles.  Harmony within contrast is important.

With a rich variety of hand building and throwing techniques I create clay art works from very small to unusually large functional to sculptural works.  Inspired by nature especially the ocean, music, painting and currently by the thrilling affects possible in Japanese/North American style RAKU firing,  I use porcelain and translucent porcelain fired to cone 5-8 in oxidation and Raku clay fired to cone 08-06 in reduction in my gas raku kiln.
#146R “Mother Boat:  Hatchery”
As seen in  “500 RAKU”, Larks Books 2011 and Potters Council Raku Calendar 2010
I express my impressions primarily with “One Off” porcelain and Raku sculptures, vessels, murals, containers, wall pieces and Art in Motion mobiles.  I can only aspire to that which takes my breath away through expressive contrasts in harmony with sublime subtlety in form, texture, colour, and movement..  It is enlivening to continue to push the materials and to learn through workshops, working with other artists and being inspired by art works in other media.

With 40 years experience and international recognition, I teach Intermediate, Advanced and Mentorship pottery classes at Atlantic Pottery Supplies in Dartmouth and work in my lakeside, woodland One Off Studio in Nova Scotia, Canada.
